LSAT in the time of Covid-19

April 03, 2020

I wish to express deep sympathy for all those whose lives and livelihoods have been impacted by the Corona virus pandemic this year. This event and the responses to control it are unprecedented unsettling.

One possible benefit of the situation though could be your LSAT score. With so many events canceled, and classes limited many of you have some extra time to put into whatever activities you choose. There is probably nothing you can do that will be more valuable than studying for the LSAT. The current average tuition for law school is about $50,000 per year, bringing the tuition cost alone above $150,000 for your three years. That is a sizeable sum and is made larger by the fact that most students will be using loans to pay for law school, so the eventual cost becomes even greater.

For the majority of law schools improving your LSAT score by just 6 points moves you from being admitted to getting a full scholarship. That means those 6 points are worth an enormous amount of money. Students from some classes who study for 250 hours very often increase their score by over 10 points and those that make it to 400 hours over 15 points! I realize that 400 hours is a LOT of time, but that change in score is literally life changing. And you don’t have to be great at math to figure out that those hours of study end up paying far better than nearly anything else that students can do with their time. Even if all those 400 hours did was get you 6 points, that would still be like getting paid $375 PER HOUR!

There has also never been a better time to study for the LSAT. The Law School Admission Council just make a MASSIVE battery of tests available for purchase in the same format and same software that they use on the ACTUAL LSAT. Since those are available digitally, you don’t even have to wait for the Amazon truck to get started. Also, many preparation companies have easy to use and extensive online programs with highly targeted learning management systems, so you can study from wherever you are. The ACE Test Prep course and many others include hundreds of hours of video instruction and explanations to support you all along your journey to a fantastic score. The BYU Continuing Education Prep class is also live streaming their classes. Some courses are also offering discounts to make this difficult time easier. For example, if you enter the code QuarantineFun! in the coupon code at ACE Test Prep site it will save you $50 off the course price.
